Thousands of veterans took to the streets of Washington, DC last weekend to protest Project 2025, federal job cuts, and threats to democracy. But unless you were watching independent media or scrolling Reddit, you probably never heard about it. Why?
Did You Hear About This Protest?
Did you see the headlines about the massive veteran-led protests in DC last weekend? No? That’s strange, because thousands of people were there. So why wasn’t it news?
Over the weekend of March 14-16, 2025, veterans, military families, and federal workers gathered in Washington, DC—and across the country—to protest Project 2025, VA job cuts, and policies they believe threaten democracy.
Yet, major news outlets barely covered it.
What Actually Happened? (The Protest MSM Ignored)
Where? Washington, DC and state capitols nationwide.
Who? Thousands of veterans, military families, federal workers, and activists gathered at key locations like the National Mall and the Heritage Foundation.
What were they protesting?
Project 2025, a conservative policy plan with sweeping federal changes.
Cuts to federal jobs and VA services, disproportionately impacting veterans.
Concerns over democratic backsliding under a second Trump administration.
Under a gray Washington sky, veterans stood shoulder to shoulder, flags draped over their shoulders, fists raised in silent defiance. A retired Marine stepped up to the mic, voice raw with frustration: "They want to erase us. We won’t let them." The crowd erupted—cheers, chants, and the steady beat of marching boots filling the air.
But where was the national media?
Where Was the Media?
Before the protest:
Newsweek wrote about it in advance.
Local stations like NBC4 Washington, FOX 5, and WUSA9 covered it.
Independent journalists streamed it live on YouTube.
After the protest? Crickets from CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, ABC, CBS, and NBC.
Search for it yourself. You’ll find coverage from:
YouTube livestreams with hundreds of thousands of views.
Reddit discussions coordinating the march and sharing firsthand accounts.
International news sources (ABS-CBN) covering it.
Substack posts discussing Project 2025 but barely touching the protests.
Yet, if you rely on mainstream national outlets, you’d have no idea it even happened.
A Pattern of Selective Coverage
This isn’t the first time. Mainstream media covers protests—when they want to.
They covered protests against Trump in 2016-2020.
They covered the Women’s March against Project 2025 in 2024.
They covered smaller protests in other cities the same week.
But thousands of veterans and citizens marching in DC? Silence.
If the protest had:
Turned violent – MSM would have covered it.
Included a celebrity speaker – MSM would have covered it.
Fit into a simple left-vs-right narrative – MSM would have covered it.
But a peaceful, large-scale, veteran-led protest against Project 2025? That didn’t make the cut.
Historically, media outlets have prioritized spectacle over substance—think back to how the Occupy movement was initially ignored until it became impossible to dismiss. Protests that don’t fit into a clear partisan battle or provide dramatic visuals often get buried, even when their implications are far-reaching.
Why does a peaceful, veteran-led protest get ignored while others receive full coverage? Is it because the narrative complicates the binary storytelling MSM thrives on? Or is it that these veterans challenge the very institutions that profit from political division?
If thousands of veterans can be erased from national coverage, what does that say about our ability to challenge power? What else have we been trained not to see?
What Can You Do?
If MSM won’t report, we have to.
Watch the protest footage on YouTube.
Follow independent journalists who covered it.
Share this post—and the videos you find.
Pay attention to the next protest: April 5 in DC.
Will MSM ignore that one too? If so, it’s a deliberate choice.
Final Thought:
These veterans swore an oath to defend democracy. Now, they’re standing against a government agenda they believe threatens it. Shouldn’t that be newsworthy?
