Yes—there’s something timeless at the core of this one. The tools and social norms shift (matchmakers, lonely hearts ads, web dating, swipe culture…), but the awkwardness, hope, confusion, and—if we’re lucky—those flashes of pure connection remain, don’t they?

Great story! I've met people like this; who seemed to be meeting criteria rather than people.

What a great piece, Robert! Although it was 2002, so many of us relate to this story, which remains relevant for single people in 2025, and those who love us. I can visualize the "flapping" moment. with a smile.
